The Bobcats had their First Scrimmage game of the 2023 Fall Season, this past Friday Night. They played the Tullahoma Wildcats, in the Battle of the Cats. Well, I called it the Battle of the Cats. In the image below you can see the Bobcats Coaching Staff watching the Game Film. They are actually grading the Game Film.
This was just an hour after the game, and they did not finish till around 1:30 am on Saturday morning. Which was really a little early compared to some nights. The Team had Pizza and Power Aides to eat after the game, and we all ate Pizza. Then, Mrs. Cali went to pickup some Burgers for the Coaches to snack on, while grading tape.

Blog Post Continued:
What does Grading Game Film mean? Great question. If you have never played football, or it has been awhile since you played, you may not be aware of what this means. So, I will do my best to explain this to you. It is very interesting, and most people are not even aware of this. So here goes my best attempt at explaining what it means.
We record from a Sideline view, and an End Zone view. This give's the Coaches 2 looks at each play. Each Position Coach grades the Players who play for them. Coach Bryce Wallace is the Bobcats QB coach, so he has the QB's to grade.
The Coaches do this after the game, because Sunday the Team will be back to watch the Game Tape, and it will be time to start prep. work for the next Team they play. So, the Coaches have to get it finished after the game. Plus, the Coaches still have the game fresh in their minds, so it is best to grade the game film after the game.
The Coaches will go slowly through every play of the game. Each Player who stepped on the Field will be watched on every play they were in on. And, depending on how they did on each play, they will get a grade. Then, the average will be added up, and that will be the Players Grade for that game. It will help show the players what they need to work on, and give the Coaches a good look at what they need to coach the player on.
Penalties (flags throwed during the game) are added up, and the Team may have to run sprints, if they did not off-set their Penalties. Now, if the Player gets a bad grade, they will not have to run, and there will be no extra work. The Grade just lets them know how well they did during the Game.
So, lets say I am Grading the QB, like Coach Wallace does. Every Play a QB is on the field, I will watch those plays, and grade how well the QB did on each play. Thank of the old school grading way. Great, Good, Fair, and Poor. With each grade, I would write down why I graded that play the way I did.
Hope that makes since. This has to be done after every game. On away games, we may not get finished Grading Game Film till the next morning around 5 or 6 am. Some games we may finish grading early, but most take a while. Every play is going to be watch 4 or 5 times. And sometimes, even more. We will step through the plays in Slow motion, and watch both angles of Film. This give's us a good look at each play.
The Bobcats play Creekwood, at Creekwood this coming up Friday Nights. That is about an hour and a half from the School, so we will not be back to the School until 11:00 pm, or a little later. Once back, the Team unloads their equipment, and heads on home. The Coaches head up to the Coach OC's room, and wait for the film to be loaded. Now a days, the film is usually already loaded and ready to watch. I can remember watching the old Tape Film, on the big Projector. Things are high tech now.
Sometimes, the Offensive and Defensive Coaches break into groups, and watch the Game Film separately. This helps them watch the film faster. That way each Coach does not have to watch through the entire Game Film. If they are an Offensive Coach, then they just watch and grade all the Offensive plays. This past Friday night, all the Coaches watched the film together. The season is yet to start, and we are still working out who is going to be actually starting. Sure, Coach OC has a good idea who is going to start, but nothing is ever in stone.
The Bobcats are only a couple weeks away from their first regular season game. We still have 2 more scrimmage games, and a lot more practices, until then. We just play Tullahoma Wildcats, and they are a TSSAA 5 A school. While we are a TSSAA 3A school. Which means, Tullahoma has a lot more Kids enrolled in their school. We barely have over 500 kids enrolled at Giles County High School. The more kids you have enrolled, the more kids you have out for your team. Last year we player with 45. This year we look to have more then that. While Tullahoma was able to cut kids from the team, and keep it around 90 kids on their team. We lucky to have enough to play both ways.
I'll talk more about that next time, or coming up. I hope I was able to explain what it means for the Coaches to Grade Game Film, and you are now more aware of what it means. If you have any questions, you can contact me anytime. Thanks for reading, and have a great day. --DOC
